Toronto Comic Arts Festival 2021 (aka TCAF) is underway, and the online version of the show is packed with a ton of incredible content. From creators to publications, and everything in between. The show runs May 8 - 15, and also features Canzine—a space dedicated to creators, as well as publications like Sequential Magazine. And, that brings me to our latest interview.

I was recently joined by Brendan Montgomery, Editor-In-Chief at Sequential Magazine, or, as it’s known by its official and slightly longer name: Sequential Canadian Comic Book Magazine. This magazine has become a well-known entity in the fabric that makes up the independent Canadian comic book scene from coast-to-coast-to-coast. Its goal is to showcase not just indie creators from all over the country, but in the most recent issue, to look back at 80 years of Canadian comics. Pretty great stuff. When you want to tell the stories that make up 80 years since the first comic book was published in Canada, you’re going to need an oversized issue. That’s just what Sequential is offering up with its 8th edition—available in digital format, as well as print. You can buy a print version via the Canzine Sequential page at TCAF 2021, or on the main Sequential site, too.

Montgomery gives us a good rundown of what Sequential is all about, and the stories it has been telling since its first issue, three years ago. Plus, a pretty cool insight into what some of the first comics in Canada have looked like, and why they were produced.
