BADASSICAL creative powerhouse: John Fleming and Collette Turner (Photo credit: Charles Cousins for GeekNerdNet)

I sat down with the creative powerhouse behind the independent comic series BADASSICAL, Collette Turner (artist) and John Fleming (writer). Not only is this series loved by its fans from all over the world, but hey, it’s also a damn cool name for a comic. The pair talk about their book and how it got started, what it takes to produce the comic, and the type of international reach their comic has.

The idea for the characters that make up this series first came to be when the two took a late night drive around La Ronge, Saskatchewan (Canada). And over time the characters and concepts evolved into this one story that they thought was funny and cool. In summary, BADASSICAL is about three young women trapped inside a reality TV show, filled with giant robots, evil ninjas and ultra violence. There’s fun along the way with how these characters deal with the reality they’ve been thrust into.

In the world of independent publishing, it’s important to be consistent. Fleming and Turner understand exactly what it means to do right by their loyal fans, and in turn that makes it easy for new readers to want to jump on board. Their fan base reaches far away spots outside of Canada including Iceland, Slovakia and a lot in Australia. Fleming even went so far as to mail something to a fan living on an island, which he said was a new one. And they think the world of their fans and are very thankful to have their support.

Turner talks about her process for characters, and the amount of trial and error that comes with that process. However, the three main characters in BADASSICAL came to her fairly quick.

They see their series going to at least 8 or 10 issues. And quite frankly, here’s hoping it’s more than that because this series is one of the most original and fun comics to come along in quite some time. The writing and art that this duo puts out is second to none. All of their books and work launch via Kickstarter, so keep an eye on their campaign page or their site to learn more.
