At the 2025 Calgary Expo I was more than excited to chat with comic book writer Jason Aaron. The number of titles under his belt is absolutely extraordinary to say the very least and he is seriously one of the nicest guys in comics. Most recently, he's received well-deserved fanfare and accolades for his work on ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN with DC, as well as his creator-owned series, BUG WARS with IMAGE COMICS. Of course, the first thing we chatted about was the absolute universe and his take on Superman, a fresh retelling for a modern era, but also connected to the most recent DC overall theme of ALL-IN. As he says, he wanted to tell the world of a Superman we didn't know before, however, make it something fun and accessible to every reader new and old alike. When I brought up his massive breadth of work, Aaron had this to say:

“I’m genuinely still just having fun and doing stories that I want to see in existence, and thankfully I've been able to build a career…literally doing exactly that…doing books that speak to me and make me happy…fortunately for me that has turned into books that seem to resonate with other people as well.”

His latest creator-owned book is called BUG WARS. It is absolutely fun. Getting into the world he's created is a dream come true for Aaron, and one he’s always thought of doing. If you haven't checked it out yet you definitely need to. The first six issues are all released and can—maybe—be found at your local comic shop. Fear not, though, the trade paperback will be released next month (Oct.8/25). And in January 2026, the SPYDER WYTCH one-shot hits shelves, followed by the return of the main series later next year. BUG WARS is one of the best books of 2025 by far. Aaron puts it like this:

“This is a very personal story for me……the the origin of it goes back to my origin story when I was 10, 11, 12 I was first discovering comics, first falling in love with them…the house we lived at in the backwoods of Alabama had this huge backyard surrounded by woods, and I spent all my time back there running around the yard playing with my He-Mann figures and Star Wars toys running through the yard and making fantasy sagas in my head… I fell a love with storytelling in that yard.”

Just hit play on our interview to hear Aaron talk all about it, and so much more comic goodness.
