I stopped by the table of creator Jarret Hartnell at Calgary Expo 2024, and we talked about SHOUT KILL REVEL, his debut graphic novel, published by Renegade Arts Entertainment, and edited by Jason Mehmel. The one thing anyone getting a glimpse of the cover to this graphic novel will notice, is its striking colours and design which not only stand out, but immediately draws you in. One super intriguing aspect of this story is it takes place after the American Civil War. The setting is the Dark West which is ruled over by a ruthless cult, and focuses in on the main character, Helmina, whom this cult believes is their lost messiah returned to them. Unfortunately, Helmina isn’t battling simple anxiety, but a nightmarish entity from beyond waiting to be unleashed from her upon the world. And, if that sounds like something you want to read, you’re not alone. At the time of writing this piece for SHOUT KILL REVEL, its Kickstarter campaign has more than doubled its initial funding goal, with just 18 hours to go before the close of its April 27/24 deadline.

Hartnell shares what the process was for his first creator-owned book, from starting with 80 pages and ending up at 216 pages. A process where Hartnell was grateful for his editor Mehmel, and the time and space given to him by Alexander Finbow, publisher at Renegade to tell the story Hartnell intended it to be told. Go on, hit play and listen to the full interview.
