Artist, director (Voltron Force) and all around great human, John Delaney, took time to speak with me at the inaugural Fan Expo San Francisco. This talented gent has been working in comics for 30-plus years and has worked on some of the top properties and characters at DC (nominated for an Eisner for his Justice League story with Scott McCloud), as well as a spectacular 25-year run with BONGO Comics, where his work hit the pages of The Simpsons, Futurama and Comic Book Guy (Eisner nominated). Ask him who his favourite superhero is and he’s likely going to say Superman, but there’s no denying how much he loves Futurama characters, too. Looking at you, Bender!

In our interview we talk about his experience, and thanks to the encouragement he received when trying to break in, he pays it forward now in giving the best advice and critique he can to encourage new talent. Delaney tells a wonderful story of meeting one of his heroes just before this year’s show in San Francisco: Carl Potts, and how he gave Delaney critique of his work which fuelled him to keep going.
