The creative team behind the book Cover of Darkness, writers George Michail and Chris Cam took time from their ridiculously busy booth at the 2019 Calgary Expo to talk about their first book. As Michail puts it: “It’s Game of Thrones meets Monster Squad.” All of the famous monsters come to light in this book: vampires, werewolves, the mummy, frankenstein and the creature from the black lagoon. And, they’re all drawn by the incredibly talented MJ Hiblen, and the book is lettered by Nikki Powers. The story is set in medieval Romania and it follows a family that is separated from one another and what happens when they come face-to-face with all of the aforementioned monsters. The family also has a secret of their own, but you’re just going to have to pick up the book to see it for yourself. I have read the collected edition and I’ll tell you this: Damn! It’s a fun ride. The writing and art come together nicely to weave this pretty wicked, cool story.

The creative duo are cousins and have a shared love of writing comics. They came up with the idea fro Cover of Darkness in 2018 over a food truck meal at a convention, and now one year later they have three single issues published, and a collected copy, too. So if you get a chance to meet them, do so because they’re super nice and they love comics just like you and me. There is a lot more here, so go ahead and listen to the full interview.
