I am so pleased to be writing about an interview I did with cartoonist, Faith Erin Hicks. I met her for the first time at Fan Expo Vancouver 2020, and I’m so glad that I did. She has worked full time in comics for the last 11 years, and has 14 published books to her name. Her work, which includes two Eisner Awards for The Adventures of Superhero Girl and The Divided Earth, as well as her New York Times best seller, Pumpkinheads. Not a bad resume at all. Not only that, if you get a chance to meet her at a convention, or book signing, just know that she’s super approachable, witty and just a genuinely nice person.

Once you see her work you’ll definitely pick something up. I should know because after she told me about The Adventures of Superhero Girl I wasted no time in handing her money to buy it for my almost-10-year-old daughter. Her most recent fantasy work is The Nameless City trilogy, inspired by BONE (Jeff Smith), as well as Avatar The last Airbender and Full Metal Alchemist. The other two books in the trilogy are The Stone Heart and The Divided Earth. Later this year, Faith has a new graphic novel coming out called One Year at Ellsmere.

And not all of her books are comics. There’s a novel, too. Faith starts off by talking about her novel like this: “COMICS WILL BREAK YOUR HEART is not a comic, it’s a word book. Otherwise known as a novel.” And if that made you laugh as it did me, then you’ll have no trouble getting into her work. The backstory is pretty cool, too. What if Jack Kirby and Stan Lee’s grand kids dated.

There’s more to it, and so much more packed into the full audio interview (below). Listen to it. Now. Please.
